We would like to invite you to observe some of the following village etiquette to ensure that you can stay healthy and safe while enjoying the village tour and contribute to the sustainable development of Hong Kong’s villages in the future.
Respect for villagers and the environment
- Greet villagers in a friendly manner and they will usually respond in kind!
- Reduce noise to avoid affecting the villagers or the natural environment.
- Do not trespass or take photographs of villagers’ homes, farms or other private places.
- Obey village rules, especially in places of religious significance.
- Keep the village clean by collecting your own garbage and using reusable items where possible.
- Do not enter the coastal area
- About animals and ecology
- Be kind to the animals, cats and dogs in the village.
- Do not feed wild animals and keep a proper distance from them.
- Respect the natural environment, don’t take away any natural creatures or plants.
Before entering village
- Plan your journey in advance
- Pay attention to the schedule of transportation (e.g. ferry to/from Lai Chi Wo)
- If you plan to have meals or supplies in the village, please know their locations and opening hours in advance.
- Find out if there is telephone coverage along the route for route tracking and external contact
- Pay attention to the weather report and avoid entering the village on days with extreme weather conditions.
- Wear appropriate clothing and shoes, and bring appropriate equipment. Consider including sunscreen and mosquito repellent, enough water or energy drinks, snacks, first aid kit and medication.
Stay safe
- Hiking along trails to avoid getting lost or encountering dangers
- Avoid hiking alone and form small groups to take care of each other.
- Remember to drink water and rest regularly during hot summer days.
- If you feel unwell, stop your activities and call for help immediately.
- To prevent hill fires, do not leave fires or smoke.
